Fuel Filters

Fuel filters can be designed as: – Petrol carburettor filter – Petrol injection filter – Diesel injection filter

Function

Their objective is to prevent the premature wear and breakage of the injection system components:

  • retaining any particle or impurity suspended as dust, rust, etc
  • eliminating the water deriving from fuel tank condense

Filtering Media

Usually fuel filters are manufactured with cellulose filtering media. Faithfully following the specifications of vehicle manufacturers, Muller Filter uses several different types of filtering media to produce its fuel filters.
Pressure drop and filter-life (dust loading capacity) are designed according the OE requirements.
Dedicated to resolve the strict efficiency requirements of New Common Rail Diesel Injection systems, Muller Filter has manufactured a new generation of high efficiency fuel filter using new multi layer media, reinforced with synthetic material.
The results are:
– great dirt holding capacity
– high efficiency
– great water separation

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The fuel pump aspirates the fuel from the tank and via a fuel filter pumps it to the carburettor/injection system. Fuel Filter prevent that contaminants plug the nozzles causing the engine stutters or stops altogether.

PETROL CARBURETTOR FILTER

The fuel pump aspirates the fuel from the tank and pumps it in the filter situated before the carburettor.  Usually the carburettor filter is a small element in nylon housing with connecting pipes; frequently the housing is transparent so contamination can be verify. The carburettor filter is situated between tank and carburettor to prevent that contaminants plug the nozzles in the carburettor.
The filtration rating is about 20 microns.

PETROL INJECTION FILTER

The fuel pump is usually mounted in the tank and pumps fuel via the filter element to the injectors. Petrol Filter prevent that contaminants plug the injector nozzles. The element is sited usually in a metal housing with connecting pipes or screw nuts. The filter is mounted at the underside of the car.
The injection system components are much sensitive to contamination, therefore is necessary that filter element is finer than the carburettor system. For this reason filtration rating is about 5-7 microns.

DIESEL INJECTION FILTER

The fuel pump aspirates the fuel from the tank and pumps it to the high-pressure injection pump via a diesel filter. The injection system components are manufactured with high precision and working to high pressure (up to 2500 bar) in the injection system. Therefore is required that filter element is able to retain abrasive particles as well as water present in the diesel fuel. The filter element is mounted in metal or nylon housing that also serves as water separator. The specific weight of water is higher than diesel fuel so the water is deposited at the bottom of the housing to be drained. In some diesel injection system, the Diesel filter has automatic water sensor: when the maximum water level in the housing filter is reached, on the dashboard starts to light up an apposite lamp which informs the necessity to drain. The Diesel filter is located at the highest circuit point therefore can catch air bubbles present in the circuit and drain them through a unscrew-bolt .
The adoption of new Common Rail Diesel Injection systems (or Electronic Unit Injection ), working to pressure up to 2500 bar, requires highest performance from Diesel Filter. Reason for Muller Filter to develop and manufacture a new generation of high efficiency diesel filter media. This particular media is produced to pair one or more synthetic melt-blown media layers on one distinctive paper media layer, guarantying greater dirt holding capacity, higher efficiency, and improved water emulsion removal characteristics. Filtration rating is about 2 to 8 microns.

Oil Filters

Oil filters can be designed as: Spin-on Filter (Metal Oil filter) which is replaced completely after its useful life; Cartridge-Filter (Metal Free) only the cartridge needs to be replaced because housing is fixed into engine.

Function

Their objective is to prevent the premature wear and breakage of the engine components:

  • Retaining any particle or impurity suspended in the oil (as dust, abraded metal, carbon deposits, soot particles, etc.) of a diameter which is superior to the lubricating film thickness
  • Eliminating the resulting product from the combustion which goes into the oil sump
  • Cooling: absorb and transport heat from engine
  • Sealing : the rings between liner and piston, etc

FILTERING MEDIA

100% of the oil filters are manufactured with cellulose filtering media. Faithfully following the vehicle manufacturer specifications, Muller Filter uses several different types of filtering media for the manufacturing of its oil filters. Pressure drop and filter-life (dust loading capacity) are designed according to OE requirements.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The oil present in the carter is aspirated from the pump and once purified by oil filter arrives to all engine components that need lubrication. There are different types of oil filters:

  • Full-flow filters
  • By-pass filters
  • Full-flow / By-pass filters (combination)

FULL-FLOW FILTERS

All the oil, aspired by the pump, pass through the filter before going to the places that need lubrication. The oil pump incorporate an overpressure valve that limits the oil pressure between 3 to 5 kg/cm2. If the pressure exceed this limit the gaskets are pressed out of their sittings or the oil filter is blown out of its sitting and oil starts leaking out.  A by-pass valve is mounted to prevent a too high pressure difference between the clean and dirty side the of the filter element. This valve opens at a pressure difference from 0,5 to 3 Bar so the oil can still lubricate the engine. An additional anti-drain valve prevents the filter to drain oil to the carter when the engine is stopped. Some filters are provided with an anti-siphon pipe to avoid oil siphoning out of the filter when the engine is stopped.

BY-PASS ASPIRATED/ COMBINATION FILTERS

The oil aspired from the carter is pumped directly to the engine components that need lubrication. In another line, where the by-pass filter is putted in, about 10% of the main oil flow passed to be filtered.
The main oil flow (about 90%) goes unfiltered to the engine, but the efficiency of the by-pass filter is however very high because the same oil is repeatedly passing the filter element, permitting to by-pass system to catch all particles ( multi-pass oil filter).

Air Filters

Air filters can be designed as: Panel air filter – Circular air filter – Cylinder air filter. Usually only the air filter element needs to be replaced because housing is fixed into engine.

Function

Their objective is to purify the air, so as to obtain a perfect mix with fuel, permitting an efficient combustion. Air filter elements prevent also the premature wear and breakage of the engine components retaining the impurity as abrasive dust, dirt, etc.

FILTERING MEDIA

Usually the air filter elements are manufactured with cellulose filtering media. Faithfully following the specifications of the vehicle manufacturers, Muller Filter uses several different types of filtering media to produce its air filters. Dedicated to resolve the strict efficiency requirements of New Injection systems , Muller Filter has manufactured a new generation of high efficiency air filter using new multi layer media, reinforced with synthetic material. This particular media is produced to pair one or more synthetic melt-blown media layers on one distinctive paper media layer, guarantying greater dirt holding capacity, higher efficiency, and improved water emulsion removal characteristics. protection from dust and dirt, preventing damage to valves, cylinders, rings, rockers and bearings.  The results are:

  • Great dirt holding capacity
  • High efficiency
  • Great water separation

The filtration rating is about 10 to 30 microns.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The engine aspirates the air through a Filter element situated between carburettor/ injection system and Air Intake. Depending on its cubic capacity, an engine could consume between 200 and 500 m3 of air per hour. The filter element is inserted in a plastic housing sited under the car hood.  Normally, Air Filter is produced with Pleated Paper media surrounded , for all his border line, from a polyurethane gasket . However other media type are used in accordance to Filtration Efficiency required.  The plastic air filter Housing avoid contact with water and it contains a temperature control sensor that regulates the Intake Air temperature , optimising the combustion efficiency.

Cabin Filter

Cabin Air filters can be designed as: – particle cabin air filter – active carbon cabin air filter. Usually only the cabin filter element needs to be replaced because housing is fixed into engine.

Function

Their objective is ensure in the passenger compartment the maximum protection against pollutants, dust, soot, bacteria, fungi, etc. Active carbon cabin air filters provide moreover additional defence against unpleasant odours, exhaust harmful fumes, benzene, ozone, etc.

FILTERING MEDIA

Particle cabin filter elements are manufactured with synthetic filtering media called NONWOVEN (not cellulose ).  To guarantee an high filtering media efficiency, the non-woven material, during its manufacture, is subjected to a processing of electrostatic effect by means of high voltage, which guarantees the total retention of micro-particles harmful to the human organism. Active carbon cabin air filters is produced with a particular media where the activated carbons are sandwiched between two outer layers.  Cabin Filter media guarantees a retention rate of 100% of particles greater than 3 micron and not less than 90% of 0.5 to 2 micron particles.
The filtration rating is about 0.5 to 3 micron.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The air aspirated from air-conditioner system pass trough Cabin filter before arriving into passenger compartment, ensuring protection against pollutants, dust, soot, bacteria, fungi, etc. Usually the filter element is inserted in a plastic housing sited under the car hood. Normally, Filter element is produced with synthetic filter media surrounded from a rigid border , sometimes coated with a sponge gasket.
Moreover the Active-Carbon Cabin Filter has a layer of active carbon able to retains unpleasant smells, exhaust harmful fumes, benzene, etc.
